To install the OS onto a Pi computer SDCARD one must use a program to write a downloaded OS disk image file onto a physical disk.

This process can get rather complex, but people have written free utilities to make it safer for new users.
Please select the instructions for your specific Desktop that you plan to use to download and install the disk image file from.
(Note: the disk installation can be done from a pi itself with a USB-to-microSDCARD adapter)
